Baptism and Child Dedications

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

2 Corinthians 5:17

Baptism

Through baptism, we share what God has done in our lives, and we commit to grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ.

The word "baptize" means to dip or immerse under water. When a person is baptized, it represents his or her identification with the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. It is an outward symbol of a person's faith and decision to be a committed Christ-follower.

To learn more about what we believe and practice about baptism at MBC, read our Baptism booklet.

For information about baptisms for children, visit the Kids Baptisms page.

Child Dedication

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. James 1:17

Everything we have belongs to God! All good and perfect gifts come from Him. Dedication, or “setting apart” of children unto God is one of parents’ first acts of leadership. Dedication is more than a ritual. It’s a commitment for parents to honor the will and the Word of God.

Child dedication is not baptism and not christening. It doesn’t guarantee a child’s salvation, but publicly expresses that the child belongs to God. This "setting apart" is an act by the parents, prayerfully declaring that this child belongs to God and committing themselves to bring up their son or daughter to respect and honor God and to love and serve Jesus Christ.

You do not need to register in advance; just show up! Child Dedication Vows

These vows are based on the principle of Hannah's dedication of Samuel: "I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him.  So now I give him to the Lord.  For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord."  1 Samuel 1:27-28

  • Will you do your best to raise this child to honor, revere, and love Jesus Christ?
  • Will you do your best to maintain a home where Jesus Christ is honored and obeyed, where the Word of God is the authority and Jesus Christ is the head?
  • Will you commit this child to God in prayer on a regular basis, trusting God to override your mistakes and make up for your shortcomings?
  • Will you actively rely on the Holy Spirit to raise this child and to incline his or her heart to the Lord?
  • Will you do your best to release this child to the will of God, whatever that might be, without bitterness or resistance?
  • Will you do your best to be disciples of Jesus Christ, so that this child has godly examples to follow?
