Dominican Republic Team Update #2

July 9, 2019

By
Kelsey Herrera, Tysons Global Impact Operations Manager

Monday, July 8

Today was a full day of ministry spread out all over the city and outlying areas of Santo Domingo.  Between our 14 teams, over 522 people heard a clear gospel presentation in a large group setting, resulting in over 44 decisions for Christ! Please pray for our local pastors as they undertake the next steps in follow up and discipleship with these children, youth and adults. In addition to our medical team treating over 160 patients today, some highlights from three of our teams include the following:

  • Kid’s Quest Team: Our youngest children on the trip did a great job today connecting with their Dominican peers in the neighborhoods they served in. This team of MBC kids and parents got to boldy present the gospel to over 120 neighborhood kids!
  • ROCK Team 1: This team got to share and minister to many kids over the day.  But, on arrival back to the hotel for dinner, Emma and some teammates got to share with a woman and her child who were hanging around the hotel entrance.  They clearly shared the gospel with her, as she shared with them how she struggles with anger.  This is a great example of our team being on mission – not just when they arrive to a “ministry” location – but looking for opportunities no matter where they are!
  • MOCO Team 1: One of our Montgomery County Campus teams facilitated a community outreach in a local church where they invited the local kids for new (free) hairdos!  Many, many kids came for this unique event! Tatiana, one of our Rock students, got to share the gospel with one of the little girls while she got her hair done. Tatiana used an object lesson to explain how important a personal relationship with God is.  This little girl indicated she wanted to pray to receive Christ so she could have this relationship too!

Nightly Debrief

After dinner tonight, David presented three words for our team to consider in light of the ministry and work our team is doing this week: evangelism, disciple-making and calling

  • Evangelism: “Evangelism is the proclamation of the gospel, in the power of the Holy Spirit, with the aim of persuading people to repent and believe in Christ.” - David Platt
Evangelism is speaking or “proclaiming” (with words) the transforming good news of Christ and what He did!  We do this “in language the lost can understand”.  We “persuade” because we know the urgency of the message we proclaim (death or life). If the gospel is true, then sharing it is not offensive to the hearer, but rather the kindest thing we can do!
  • Disciple Making“Disciple making is the Christ-commanded, Spirit-empowered duty of every disciple of Jesus to evangelize unbelievers, baptize believers, teach them the Word of Christ, and train them to obey Christ as members of His church who make disciples on mission to all nations.” - David Platt
Once someone trusts in Christ, they have public professions of their faith, such as baptism and the learning and training up in the Word of Christ. All believers have the important opportunity to come alongside other (immature) believers to walk with them as they grow in their faith.   The spirit of God is in us, for the purpose of seeing disciples made all over the Earth!  What a mission!
  • Calling:  There are four “callings” we see in Scripture.
    • First, “The call to SALVATION; the gracious act of God by which He draws people to become disciples of Jesus and members of His church.”  - David Platt
The grace of God draws or calls you to salvation.  Through Evangelism, believers get to be a part of this initial “calling” in the lives of others.  Often, we are tempted to base our identity in things that are not eternal, instead of basing our identity in Jesus.
    • Second, “The call to MISSION:  the call to be a disciple of Jesus includes a call to make disciples of Jesus among the nations.” - David Platt
Every disciple of Jesus is called to make disciples (Matt. 28).
    • Third, “The call to STATION:  the call to exalt Jesus in different roles in our lives…this is played out in different roles…as a member of a family (as a son/daughter, mom/dad, husband/wife, or single)…as a member of a church…as a citizen in a country”. - David Platt
The Bible contains different and varying instructions for these different roles or “stations” in our lives.  These three “callings” build on each other, and based on these three, we see the fourth call.
    • “The call to SERVICE:  the way in which God directs disciples to make disciples in a certain way, at a certain time, among a certain people, in a certain location, or through a certain vocation.” - David Platt

David closed by reminding us that we are each uniquely gifted by God and equipped to make disciples.  Do not underestimate where God is calling you, so maximize the station, location, or vocation you are in!  Every believer has the opportunity to be a part of the Great Commission.  This is exciting news!
