Rooted in the Gospel

October 20, 2017

By
Jordan Thigpen, New City Network

John Piper is credited with the famous quote, “Missions exist because worship doesn’t.”

Dr. Piper was referring to international missions, but what do we do with that now that we are living in a global society. The DC Metro is riddled with what missiologists call “unreached people groups.” With all of the dynamics of languages and cultures that come with unreached peoples, how do we as McLean Bible Church participate in engaging missions in a way that God receives more worship? Here’s my proposal of a rewrite of Dr. Piper’s quote: church planting exists because worship doesn’t…and because Jesus said so.

This Sunday, we are highlighting the effort of McLean Bible Church to bring glory to God through the planting of churches. The goal of this blog is to be a resource for McLean Bible Church, and the thousands we hope will get involved in the work of church planting. This Sunday, you are going to see a couple of things. New City Network has around 50 church planters in our network. While we can do our best to help you get to know their stories, it is hard to convey everything that God has done and is doing in these churches. But as with any story, the best way to hear the whole thing is to start with the first words. To facilitate McLean Bible jumping into the stories of its church planters, we created a deck of cards. We will have a couple thousand physical copies for Sunday, but once those run out anyone can see the cards on newcityplanting.org/prayercalendar

The cards consist of a picture of the planter, information about their church plant, and some information about their family. Perhaps most importantly, it displays a time that we ask that you pray for them. What if the  thousands of people that call McLean Bible Church home gave a collective push of prayer for each church plant all at the same time? Consider what you would be doing. Ethiopian churches, Cameroonian churches, Korean churches, Black churches, Chinese churches, White churches, multi-ethnic churches; you would be participating through prayer in fulfilling the Great Commission. We encourage you to take this back of cards, physically or digitally, and put them somewhere you’ll see often. Put them by the mirror for when you’re getting dressed in the morning; put them in the cup holder of your car; put them by your computer mouse on your desk; put them somewhere that will empower you to pray for the church planters that lean on McLean Bible Church to be successful in their mission.

If you look at the cards and think you’d really like to pray more specifically for each planter, we have an opportunity for you as well. We have an email that goes out monthly called “Prayer Warriors.” In the email, you will responses from our church planters to New City asking them to give us specific prayer requests that they want McLean Bible praying for. In their responses we have often seen incredible works of God that we get to celebrate! We also see their incredible troubles, and we pray.
