Together + Forward | Day 11

September 27, 2017

By
Lon Solomon, Senior Pastor Emeritus

Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you in every good thing to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. Hebrews 13:20-21

Here we have one of the great doxologies (benedictions) found in the New Testament. Personally, I love this one! It says so much. It reminds us that only the Lord, working in us by the power of the Holy Spirit, can produce in us "that which is pleasing in His sight." Being the sinners that we are in our flesh, even our desire to obey God, as well as the spiritual power to do so, must all come from God Himself! And this is a great daily prayer for us: "Incline my heart towards your statutes" (Ps 119:36).

But beyond that great truth, there is another one here - namely, that Jesus our Lord is the only one who can "equip us in every good thing to do His will." Whatever the ministry or area of service where the Lord calls us to do His will - volunteer or vocational - only He (by the inner working and power of the Holy Spirit) can give us the resources we need to actually DO it effectually. Human talent and grit can produce human results - but only Spirit-given talent and power can produce divine results. And this is what the work of Jesus Christ in our world today so desperately needs - divine results!

TONIGHT, our church family meets to vote on the nomination by our elders for David Platt to be the next Pastor-Teacher of McLean Bible Church. This is a historic moment for our church family, and it will certainly be a historic moment in David's life if indeed we vote to confirm him. And I'm praying that we will.

If indeed we do, then these must be our church family's constant prayers for David as they have been for me for the past 37+ years:

I hope to see you all at the Congregational Meeting tonight at 7:30 pm. Better yet, come join us for prayer beforehand at 7 pm.

Prayer
Lord, please equip David in every good thing to do Your will - as our pastor and leader here at MBC.
Give him a double portion of the Spirit you gave Lon (2 Kings 2:9).
Like Jabez, empower and enable David to expand the borders, and the impact for Jesus, of MBC beyond anything You were pleased to do with Lon (1 Chr. 4:10).
And to You, Lord, be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
